This time of the year is tough on many people as the weather often plays a huge factor in people’s moods. The darkness of winter can cause many people to feel down and depleted, lacking energy. For some more serious levels of depression set in.
Many feel so down they don’t want to leave their homes, yet the more they stay in, the deeper their “down” sinks in, the worse things get for them.
I know for me this time of the year when the sky is gray and there is no sun- it’s hard on me, so I make a real point of trying to keep busy and to clear the cobwebs from my brain. I want to encourage you to be more proactive in doing so!
There are numerous things you can do to shake that winter rut:
- If you have a dog, they say you should walk your dog for a good 30mins. This not only gives your dog exercise, but also gives you a reason to get out. Fresh air is always good for you. I know some of you dread walking your dog in the freezing cold, but trust me: that first breath of fresh air that fills your lungs makes you feel alive again.
- Occupy yourself. If there is a favorite game you like to play, play it. If you have a hobby- commit yourself to doing it. Keep yourself busy!
- Encourage family night, or do a puzzle or watch a movie together during the day.
- But most of all, DON’T LET IT GET YOU DOWN! I know it’s hard. You just have to remind yourself that the sun is out there waiting to break through the clouds, and if you feel the need to, talk to someone other than family. I am here for you.
